I know I know I know, how long has it been since the last post (cue the bugler)? Sorry fellas, it has been a busy week of it all in all, and a bit disjointed at that; plus I have been doing battle with the slideshows and up until tonight was on the losing side (SOOOOO many google hits containing instructions on how to do it; exactly the same number of hits where those instructions DO NOT WORK, AAAAGH!). However I am happy to report that it looks like the tide is turning, and there should be head on, side on and miscellaneous piccies up shortly (then all I have to do is work out how to insert video on this thing and I'll be sorted; shouldn't take too long.....you are prepared to wait until about 2018 for that aren't you?!!)........
Anyway, to business; and this is a bit of a head-scratcher (scratches head for effect) as it has been anything but an exemplary week. Made it to the gym on Thursday, and badminton on Friday; but other than that it was a bit of a naughty one. Sunday - instead of gymming - I went to support my brother while he was doing the Sheffield half marathon (nice to watch someone else working up a sweat for a change, but it was a brutally hot day for it!), and Tuesday I missed the gym again (the old 'forgot my towel' routine). But what really gave me cause for concern was Saturday, and the reunion of the university posse (so it really was a reUNIon.....chortle chortle....).
It was a lovely day, and another scorcher. Great to see everyone doing so well, and for the most part I behaved myself. Not a drop of alcohol passed my lips, and I limited myself to only a few sausages and burgers; I felt truly virtuous....until SHE came, with her tin of delights......
The 'she' in question is a woman called Fidelma (Fid). Having done a maths degree she possessed such a strong passion for her subject...that she trained to be a chef! As I write she is gainfully self-employed as a supplier of baked goods to various cafes in the London area, and last Saturday we had the pleasure of tasting her merchandise (that sounds rude, but it isn't meant to be!). Without a doubt, she has a gift; her carrot cake is to die for, her cookies delicious, but the cake that really takes the......errrr......cake......is her chocolate brownies. Oooooooooooh, myyyyyyyyyy, GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD (that works for god and good; take your pick). I genuinely have not tasted anything like it before; a bit of a crispy outside and a lot of a gooey chocolatey inside. The sensation of eating one (or two.......or.....) was such that those brownies were the only naughty food I have eaten in the last year where I really didn't care if it made me put on weight; my mind was much more agreeably engaged! Very, VERY dangerous!!!
So I got on the scales expecting another gain, but what I got was three pounds off. Now back to 16 stone 5 pounds. Who knows? Maybe our Fid has discovered a delicious, sensory overload of a chocolate brownie which is low in fat..........not buying it?.....nope, nor am I!! (I do recall having another Chinese takeaway this week too!). I can't help thinking that there's something fishy going on here; it's a possibility that one of either last or this week's weigh-ins have been a bit dodgy, maybe there has been some late-acting benefits from Great Manchester. Well, whatever the reason, I'll take the result, but it's now time to get back into the usual routine; getting the pounds off, and the miles on. Plenty of time to go until the Great North, but if the last three months of training is anything to go by I'll be on the Tyne bridge before I can say 'THIRTEEN MILES???? I MUST BE MAD!!' Gym tomorrow......actually......make that, gym later on today....!
WELCOME
Hello there everyone, and welcome to my blog (hats off to 'Blogging for Dummies' for teaching this dummy how to....you know!).
I am overweight; make that very overweight. I think the technical term is 'morbidly obese'....ouch! Over the last few years I have had a few health warning shots, enough to make me realise that although there is nothing going on with my health that can't be reversed; my time is running out to do something about it before something really bad happens.
So this is my journey to health, and the plan is an ambitious one. I want to lose weight, and I want to get fitter; fit enough to run the Manchester 10k in May of 2012, fit enough to run a half marathon towards the end of 2012, and then fit enough to run the London Marathon in 2013, where the blogging journey will end at the finish line down the Mall.
I write this in the hope that the words and thoughts of both myself and readers can inspire me when the journey gets difficult, then hopefully people can be inspired by my story; believing that the most difficult journey is possible.
I make a promise to you that I will be honest - if the wheels fall off and I have six pizzas in two days, I will come clean - and I will do my very best. Share it with me.
......Wish me luck!!
