Do you remember a while ago, I talked about certain pivotal moments during the course of this challenge? Moments when it all becomes that little bit more real, and I become (or should be) that little bit more committed? Well, here is another one comin' atcha!
The greatest threat to succeeding - and my fear - are things over which I have limited control; trusting some of it to luck. Injury is one thing - although that can be managed, and the fitter I get, the less I am likely to do myself a mischief. My greatest concern however, is not being accepted onto the runs themselves. There are plenty of other half marathons and full marathons around the same date as the Great North and London, but I have kind of set my heart on what are the prima races of their kind. Let's face it, if I am going to do this, I want to do it in some style!.......
Application for The Great Manchester Run is done and dusted, I'm in; and now I am delighted to inform you that it has become TWO down and only ONE to go, as I have received my acceptance to the Great North Run (16th September). Note to any budding runners who want to follow in my footsteps (in heavens name why, WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO DO SUCH A THING?!!); don't bother going through a ballot process; go through a charity, much better chance of getting a place (not to mention an added incentive to do it). So it's the British Heart Foundation again (they are going to do alright out of me in the next 15 months), with a commitment to raise £750+. I think that's do-able.
So there we are, committed again. If you are wondering at the fact that I have been approved to run a half marathon - which may I remind you is over 13 miles - at a time when I would struggle to run even one (okay, I may exaggerate a little; let's say one and a half!); so am I. The strange thing is that I am not panicking. The program I have set for myself is well capable of getting me there (and moving on from there too). It is a strange feeling, but a good feeling as one part of my brain is telling me my anxiety levels should be through the roof, but the rest of said brain is not reacting (I am drugged up on antibiotics though, possibly that's the reason!). There are undoubtedly going to be more tough times ahead, times when my teeth get gouged, times when a distance of 6, 13, or 26 miles just seems too far, times when I want to stop.
I am looking forward to it........!
WELCOME
Hello there everyone, and welcome to my blog (hats off to 'Blogging for Dummies' for teaching this dummy how to....you know!).
I am overweight; make that very overweight. I think the technical term is 'morbidly obese'....ouch! Over the last few years I have had a few health warning shots, enough to make me realise that although there is nothing going on with my health that can't be reversed; my time is running out to do something about it before something really bad happens.
So this is my journey to health, and the plan is an ambitious one. I want to lose weight, and I want to get fitter; fit enough to run the Manchester 10k in May of 2012, fit enough to run a half marathon towards the end of 2012, and then fit enough to run the London Marathon in 2013, where the blogging journey will end at the finish line down the Mall.
I write this in the hope that the words and thoughts of both myself and readers can inspire me when the journey gets difficult, then hopefully people can be inspired by my story; believing that the most difficult journey is possible.
I make a promise to you that I will be honest - if the wheels fall off and I have six pizzas in two days, I will come clean - and I will do my very best. Share it with me.
......Wish me luck!!
