WELCOME

Hello there everyone, and welcome to my blog (hats off to 'Blogging for Dummies' for teaching this dummy how to....you know!).

I am overweight; make that very overweight. I think the technical term is 'morbidly obese'....ouch! Over the last few years I have had a few health warning shots, enough to make me realise that although there is nothing going on with my health that can't be reversed; my time is running out to do something about it before something really bad happens.

So this is my journey to health, and the plan is an ambitious one. I want to lose weight, and I want to get fitter; fit enough to run the Manchester 10k in May of 2012, fit enough to run a half marathon towards the end of 2012, and then fit enough to run the London Marathon in 2013, where the blogging journey will end at the finish line down the Mall.

I write this in the hope that the words and thoughts of both myself and readers can inspire me when the journey gets difficult, then hopefully people can be inspired by my story; believing that the most difficult journey is possible.

I make a promise to you that I will be honest - if the wheels fall off and I have six pizzas in two days, I will come clean - and I will do my very best. Share it with me.

......Wish me luck!!

Weigh in (34)

I'm still yo-yo-ing, but when the first yo is a weight increase it's good news to yo it back down the week after; and that is just what's happened. Two pounds off to a pleasing if still a little rotund 16 stone 10 pounds. I know what you're thinking, next week is crucial (what do you mean, you weren't thinking that?!) as a further weight loss will break the uppy-downy cycle (that sounds like a better name for one of those exercise machines when you pedal while moving the handlebars back and forth). The chances of this are excellent; with a match tonight and on Friday night, followed by a visit to the gym on Sunday morning exercise levels will be nice and high. Barring a medieval-type hedonistic banquet every night, even I can't mess it up this week..........?!!? In truth I am really pleased with how things are going at the moment. Monitoring - and writing about - progress weekly has really helped stop these fluctuations becoming gains. I am totally convinced that without this blog I would be back above 17 stone again, or worse.......

It'll be good to get into the gym. Since the induction I have not managed it (too many blummin' badminton matches!) and I am sure that my exercise card has now been consigned to the 'turned up for his induction and never came back, what a waste of my flippin' time' pile. My inductor (Sam) was a really nice fella, and I am already perfecting my best sheepish look when he asks me why I've not been in yet. Got to do it though. I've already passed the three months-to-go mark for the Great Manchester stagg.....errr...run, and although there is plenty of time to work my way up to 10k, I am keen to keep the pressure off myself by getting to that level in training, sooner rather than later. It would be nice to know that the distance is well within my capabilities by the time I cross the start line (if only for the first of the three races; I don't anticipate being quite so confident for the other two!).
By the way, finally got a decent camera so updated 'head on' and 'side on' photos should be uploaded soon. I am not counting my chickens that there will be any significant change in my appearance (personally I think that will come when the regular gym sessions start, and I can combine aerobic work with weight-training on my abs, my glutes, my quads, my ewoks and my klingons), but whatever the change it should not look any worse. If it does I am already blaming it on the change of camera!!

Good-o! The positivity is fizzing down the internet lines from you to the readers (me!), and hopefully matched by a fizzing back! Do you get the idea that I've been writing the sodding PhD too long, and need to break free??!!
Higs (or even hugs), and good luck with all the exercise to come ... W-A x.

@Wee_Ali
Don't worry; I'll only be seriously worried about you writing your PhD when you can no longer spell it; could I just say for the record that Doctor Armstrong does sound mighty distinguished! Fizz away my dear xx
